New AED’s For the First Aid Squad
In January 2007 the Long Valley First Aid Squad purchased 9 Defibtech lifeline semi- automatic external defibrillators (AED). An AED is a medical device that can reset the heart if it is in an abnormal rhythm. When a victim is in cardiac arrest, bystander CPR and quick access to this device is the best way to help a victim. CPR is a skill that will keep the victim viable until the AED is available. It is truly the AED that makes the difference.
The AED does not “jump start” the heart as so many believe. It actually stops a rhythm that is not beneficial and resets the beat. While CPR manually keeps the pump (heart) working the AED will reset the electrical component of the heart. If successful, this will then let the heart take over on its own.
Every vehicle the squad owns now has an AED. They are the most current versions in regards to the new American Heart Association protocol. These units are programmed to be used on either adult or children. Previous units were not set for the pediatric population.
The Long Valley First Aid Squad will continue to stay abreast of the new and improved changes in emergency care. We are pleased to inform our community of our commitment to their care.
