New Heavy Rescue truck placed in service:
Part of the Long Valley First Aid Squad’s mission in providing emergency medical services to the citizens of Washington Township is the deployment and operation of two rescue vehicles. Each rescue vehicle is equipped with Hurst Jaws of Life hydraulic tools, vehicle stabilization equipment, air powered tools, high pressure lifting bags, auxiliary lighting, generators, and assorted hand tools. Each rescue is also equipped with medical equipment such as jump kits, trauma bags, backboards and AED’s. All of these items are essential to running a rescue scene. Members of the Long Valley First Aid Squad Extrication Team are required to obtain multiple certifications in vehicle rescue and also obtain at least a First Responder certification to provide emergency medical care.
At the Flocktown Roadand Sub Station a 1997 Dodge 2500 Diesel Pickup with a custom body built to house a gasoline powered generator and a electrically powered hydraulic power unit. This unit carries multiple hydraulic cutting and spreading tools as well as electric and battery operated cutting tools. This unit is also capable of wilderness rescue where an injured victim is located in a remote area such as Schooleys Mountain Park or Hackelbarney Park.
At the main station, on Rt. 24, a 2005 Pierce-Kenworth Mid Sized Rescue is stationed. This multi-mission truck is capable of not only providing vehicle rescue services but also is a mass casualty response unit, holding 6 backboards, triage equipment, jump-kits and multiple trauma bags. This unit is also capable of providing fire-fighter rehab. It has a 45 gallon on board potable water tank, misting fans, two tables, 5 folding chairs and an awning to provide shade while fire fighters take a break from the heat or stay out of the rain. This vehicle caries an extensive amount of vehicle rescue gear to the scene. The truck is capable of operating three hydraulic tools simultaneously during a rescue operation. This vehicle also caries specialty stabilization equipment that can be deployed on an overturned or side resting vehicle to make the scene safe for rescue personnel to remove the patient.
The Long Valley First Aid Squad’s Vehicle Rescue Team trains on a monthly basis and cuts an average of 12 cars a year during training exercises. |
